Where to edit the map

Post  Taylor on Mon Jan 16, 2012 7:51 am

This is a list of changes that need to be done to the map:

- Magna Graeca (more provinces)
- Northern Italy (less provinces)
- Ionia (more provinces/more suitably shaped provinces)
- China (more provinces)
- Egypt (more provinces)
- Japan (less provinces)

Actually Magna Grecia regions are fine expect from sicily(unless ofcourse you want to put in the game EVERY city that was a state back then,it would make it lag atrouciously though)

Well I was thinking of splitting the province of Calabria in two or three, since it's pretty big and there were more Greek colonies around there.

I agree that Magna Graeca should have more provinces, It was a really important region troughout this period. Also Northern Italy should have less because the Etruscans are too powerful and the region wasn't really that important.

Well many say tha the Romans got their "Culture" from the Etruscans as well as the Romans, also the Etruscans sohuld start with 5 in Free subjects as they were a free society, even with our measures met.

I'm just saying that Northern Italy wasn't nearly as important 650BC-200BC as it was in the renaissance/early modern era, which the map is designed for.
Besides, the Romans need to have a high chance of beating the Etruscans. It will be very hard for them to do so when the Etruscans have so many provinces. The ideal scenario for Rome's conquest of Italy would be 1. They avoid war with the Etruscans at first. 2. They become a republic and annexes some of its smaller neigbours 3. They destroy the Etruscans.
I think the Etruscans should mostly stay out of wars if controlled by the AI.

I agree that the number of provinces in Northern Italy should be reduced. I'll add it to the list.

Post  Taylor on Thu Jan 19, 2012 10:56 am

look what I did:

Doris is owned by Halicarnassus
Ionia is owned by Miletus
Smyrna is owned by Smyrna
Lesbos is owned by Mitylene
Aeolis is owned by Cyme
Troas is owned by Abydos
Mysia is owned by Cyzicus
Aenus is owned by Aenus

The provinces of Manisa, Anatolia and Denizli could maybe be rearranged into 4 or 5 provinces (that's why I didn't change the positions of the text and city yet). Thoughts?

Great work! I agree on the Lydian provinces. It's an important region.

...and that's China and Magna Graecia:

I'm probably going to edit it a bit more, since in 650 BC there were more small states than this.

Ok, Poseidonia probably was founded "at the end of the 7th century BC" (at least that's the age of the oldest pottery found there), but I just put it there anyway because it was really important and I wouldn't know what to put there otherwise. With a little imagination it already existed in 650BC.

Btw, I just found out there's such a thing as a position editor... and I painstakingly edited already so many positions by hand! Aargh!

Ok, I was looking into how to mod Egypt, and I started thinking: how many provinces do we want for Egypt? It shouldn't suddenly become really strong, because it wasn't in reality.

I know have 16 cities on the nile alone. Around 6 or so are needed to fill up the rest. Does that seem reasonable?

16 seems a bit too much actually. Maybe merge one or two? I was thinking maybe 6 in the delta, and then about 7 upstream.

Egypt now looks like this. Which provinces should go?

I was myself thinking I could maybe merge Abydos & Tjehu, and Bubastis & Tanis. Unless you have a better idea Smile

Btw Alexandria should be Hermopolis Parva, I haven't changed the name yet.

I agree on those. Maybe Edfu and Aswan too? Other than that it's good. Only criticism is that the provinces are a bit too square, but that's not a big issue.

I decided not to merge Aswan and Edfu, since that would make the resulting province look strangely elongated. But we can just make the two provinces worth half as much, right? I also made the provinces less square by letting them "follow" the river more closely.

Thoughts?

Next I'm gonna merge a bunch of provinces in Japan.

Ah, that's much better. farao

I don't think merging Edfu and Aswan would look wierd. The province Dalmatia is really long and narrow too, I don't think that looks wierd.

Edit: You could split Edfu up between Aswan and Thebes. That would make it look less wierd.

I agree that it would not look too weird.

However, I've decided not to merge Edfu and Aswan. Both of them are well-known and important Egyptian cities, so I think the map will look much better when they're both present. I.e. if I had to choose between the two I wouldn't know which one to choose and choosing one over the other would look quite arbitrary to me. If we want upper Egypt to be worth less than lower Egypt, I think reducing the worth of the entire upper region vs. the delta region is both more elegant and more realistic.

Btw thanks for your comment in the 650BC thread on paradoxplaza! Smile

Re: Where to edit the map

Post  Taylor on Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:55 am

Here is what I'm planning to do in terms of merging provinces.

First off, North Italy. I really only re-arranged Etruscan provinces, since the others are uncolonized anyway (and will remain so for a long time).

I'll probably shave off a little of the Rome province in favor of Velch. Comments?

Second, Japan:

In black are localized names I think were important in ancient Japan, the purple are region names. As you can see, two provinces lack names altogether. Also, many of these names are probably anachronistic. That's because I'm finding it very hard to find much information about the location of ancient Japanese cities and regions. Any help with that would therefore be appreciated.

Etruscans look ok.

Japan looks good too, but Kyushu deserves 2 provinces. Dunno about the place names, but the 4 northernmost provinces should be Ainu or Emishi culture.

Ainu didn't exist yet back then, and Emishi where descendants of the original Jomon people that lived in Japan at the start of our scenario, so I think the provinces, like the rest of Japan except maybe Yamato, should be Jomon. I'm thinking of giving the Japanese nation (and the Yamato province) "Japanese" as culture though, to signify the cultural change that was going on around the time. Also, Japan should be much smaller than it is in the current version (they should really only own the Yamato province), and they can then slowly colonize Japan and replace the original Jomon culture. I think the cultural shift will be nicely modeled that way.

I agree on Kyushu, it was important. I'll give it two provs.

I just realised you've done all that's listed in the top post. So I thought I'd add some more to that list. Very Happy

-The province of Basra should be removed in favor of the persian gulf.
-The western Medeterranian costal provinces needs some changes. It shouldn't look wierd if a Greek state colonises Languedoc, or if Carthage colonises Fez.
-Small provinces in Gaul should be merged with larger ones.
-Not sure if Northern Europe will be relevant but there's obviously too many provinces there.
-Maybe add split Messenia from Laconia?
-Some more provinces in Persia proper.

I'll... get to it :p. I'm a bit tired of map modding right now, but you make good points. Another region that needs some attention is the Black Sea coast btw.
